FROZEN ALTARS

Recent events in the divine palaces have been unsettling. Two of Odin's sons have come into conflict:

Baldur and Hodur

This dispute escalated so brutaly and rapidly that the god-king commanded his sons to resolve it in the icy realm of Helheim - the winner in this deathly duel will earn the right to return to his father's burgh.

However, to kill a god is no trivial feat. Both brothers were well-aware that gods can reincarnate and return to existence as long as mortals who worship them remain. Thus, each took with him a ship full of devoted Viking followers. They journeyed across numerous seas and worlds, ultimately settling on frosty isles. As long as these devout followers live, Baldur and Hodur will continue to resurrect near their ship-based settlements.

Observing the situation from on high, Odin was unwilling to leave the outcome to mere chance. He thus decreed the forging of ten icy altars on these frozen islands. Their purpose is to bridge the realm of the gods, Asgard, with the icy domain of Helheim. Through these constructs, Odin's sons could offer prayers and tributes, seeking various aids - be it economic, military, or magical. However, always remember: Odin does not favor the indecisive. Never ask for multiple blessings at once!

Some primary blessings can be invoked from anywhere in this realm. Others, more potent and numerous, require the presence of Baldur or Hodur in a designated sacred area. Each sacred site bestows different blessings: those closer to your settlement favor defense and economy, while those nearer to your enemy's base lean towards offense and destruction. Simply ensure offerings are stored within a warehouse, dwelling, or similar structure to present them as diplomatic tributes. Every magical edifice bears a unique alphabetic mark.

In spite of its biting cold and encompassing darkness, the frigid Helheim differs greatly from the world of living men, Midgard. It's devoid of varied terrains and snaking rivers. Moreover, its very foundation, rooted in Yggdrasil, is precarious and ill-suited for the sprawling masses of mankind. Across this entire realm, a mere thousand souls can exist without risk. Any more, and the land's very balance could teeter. Odin, in his wisdom, knows this. Thus, should a tribe's population exceed 495 individuals, divine retribution will be swift and relentless, persisting until numbers are sufficiently culled.

Aware of these truths, the divine siblings readied themselves for mutual conflict. Yet, against their murderous inclinations, they brokered a temporary truce. Neither Baldur nor Hodur, nor any among their kin and followers, shall cross into enemy territories or unleash calamities upon the other until the declared period of peace concludes.

You, noble player, must negotiate the duration of this peace with your adversary. Be ever mindful: Odin's ravens keep a vigilant watch!

As one brother lay lifeless on the ground, the gods' quarrel was unmistakably settled. Much blood was spilled in this matter, and its resolution is now clear. The son of Odin, left with no alternatives, must return to his ancestral gates. The journey to the gods' realm awaits!
